Eh, not worth it
It’s just.. ok. The marketing is hype here. This has nowhere near enough horsepower to handle fluid 8K video let alone 4K. This is a basic, Chinese Android box. It doesn’t even use a standard Android TV version. If you use apps off the official Google Play Store, you will quickly find out that it’s not officially supported. Instead, you’re fed apps through a third party app store. There are much better streaming box options out there that are way cheaper and provide a much better experience.

Works sometimes
I was excited to try this box out, I do have alot of the other ones from different companies. Box is small and very lightweight. I do have some issues getting stuff downloaded to it, it can be used as a browser, but one thing I’ve noticed it’s really leggy when watching something. Overall I can’t really recommend due to the issues. 2 🌟

Snappier than expected!
I have an older version android box with 2 gigs of ram and a much slower 32 bit processor so compared to it this one is quite a bit snappier. I’ve noticed it loads apps fairly quickly, certainly reasonable for most people. I use an AppleTV for most of my streaming and as expected this box doesn’t perform as good but, if you keep reasonable expectations you won’t be disappointed. There’s a lot of fun to be had and many apps to be played around with so it’s definetly something worth having. So as long you’re not expecting the same performance you’d get from a streaming device that costs 5x as much I think you’d be satisfied with this. Plus, it has potential that other streaming box’s don’t. Two thumbs up and 5 stars

Not recommended
I wanted to love this device, but it’s just not a replacement for the competition. The most challenging and annoying thing is that there’s just no documentation. It comes with a quick start guide, but there’s no additional manual that I could find, so navigating and finding functionality it trial and error. The remote buttons themselves aren’t very responsive, often needing you to hit them multiple times to get them to register, even in a small living room where I’m only 10 feet from the unit. I fiddled around with the device for several hours, and it just wasn’t worth the time investment for me to dope it all out and get it working well. Not recommended.

It Did Not Work For the “MAX (HBO)” App
It did not work with the MAX app, it streamed the video but there was no sound. I tried the Youtube app and that streamed without any problems. Since I wanted this primarily to stream MAX, I don’t have much use for it. I didn’t see in the manual or the manufacturer’s website where to go for support or I would have pursued this further.

Meh
Don’t really see the point of this device. Honestly felt I was better off just connecting my computer to my tv instead. The main thing I wanted to check is whether I could install ublock origin onto firefox. I was able to do this since google play store is installed. I installed firefox beta and I was able to add the adblock extension with my filters. I was able to watch 9anime without issue. I was able to download some apps using apk but some of them seemed to lag pretty bad like weverse. I felt this device was time consuming considering I needed to connect my bluetooth keyboard to it for better navigation. If you already have a computer or tablet, you don’t really need this.

Decent specs held back by bad software
This review is for the RUPA Android TV Box 13.I ordered this to use as a streaming device. The build quality is acceptable. The unit itself is very lightweight and the plastics material feels thin and hard plasticky. The build quality of the remote seems to be a better quality with a brushed texture and rubber buttons. The specs of the unit on paper is promising, however that’s where the positives end.The RUPA seems to be using a very base level Android TV software. In fact, when I registered the device and signed into Google App Store, the RUPA is identified as a Pixel 5 device. When you download apps, you’ll either get the mobile phone version or a web version. Either way it is a bad experience. For apps like Netflix, I can’t get the full resolution. I think this is due to the Netflix app being the mobile version and plays at either 480p or 720p. In other apps such as VUDU, you get the web version. And this is particularly frustrating because, to navigate the “app” you have to switch the remote to mouse mode. There is no way to tell when you need mouse mode until you press the navigation buttons and realize the selection box doesn’t move. While this device technically supports 4K playback, the software implementation itself doesn’t allow this to actually work.Do note, the RUPA comes pre-installed with Kodi and Downloader. So you could use RUPA with your own personal media library. Configuring Kodi is not for plug and play beginners. If you are familiar with Kodi then the RUPA might be appealing. Be very careful though, I did a factory reset in the process of using the RUPA and realized that Kodi and Downloader were not installed or registered as System apps so the reset erased those apps. It was a bit of a tedious process to reinstall those apps because you have to basically sideload the apps. I never bothered to finish configuring Kodi because it is tedious and I just don’t have the time.I had this device for a little over a month and wanted to give the manufacturer time to release an update that might address these issues. However, as of this review, the software version is still at 1.0 and all of my issues/complaints persist. In summary, I cannot recommend the RUPA Android TV Box 13 at all. The only reason I’m giving this device 2 stars is because the hardware specifications are decent. The software renders this device unusable for general customers looking for a streaming device.

Keyboard is less than desired
Update: Are you having issues with sound and playback of Max (formally HBO Max) on this device? Go to the bottom for my fix.I have several FireTV sticks, Roku boxes, Roku TVs, and many game systems that have media apps on them. So I got this to compare. The remote needs 2 AAA batteries, which I didn’t have on me initially, so… but this turned out to be one of my favorite media boxes.Pros:- Small and lightweight, low-energy box. In comparison to similar devices, this one is quite lightweight.- It has many great features, Wifi 6, 4GB RAM, and a decent CPU. That’s all great.- Supports 8K, but unfortunately, I have nothing higher than 4K, so I can not confirm that it outputs 8K.- It has a mouse mode that can be activated by clicking the button above the “1” button. Read my note below*- It has all major media apps from the built-in app store, but you’re always free to use the Google Play store.- I have seen no lag, stutter, audio problems, or otherwise from playing media files whether streaming on Hulu, Disney+, etc. or through my NAS.Cons:- The keyboard it comes with is difficult to use. The keys are skewed and it makes it hard to type things in.- I was not able to select “English (United States)” only “English (UK)” which are not the same. The dialects have subtle differences in spelling and many different idioms.- The remote control uses IR instead of Bluetooth, and this is very disadvantageous as not pointing in the right direction just causes it to ignore me.- I noticed that when I hold down the directional buttons, that it always goes 1 or 2 steps over what I’m trying to select. It lags just ever so lightly when it goes from being held down to not being held down.On the fence:- I don’t believe the HDMI cable that comes with it is 8K to be honest. My 4K HDMI cables are quite bulky and the one 8K HDMI cable I have is extremely bulky. These looked like older HDMI cables that only support 1080p (FHD).Notes:- * Mouse mode will allow you to install apps that knowingly track you like “ES File Manager”. Personally, I don’t care if it tracks me, because it allows me to play local media files from my NAS, when VLC can’t by default. However, I recommend MX Player Pro from the Google Play store instead if you have money and therefore a choice, since it has better video/audio sync support (in comparison, VLC desyncs often with certain files). You can get to the Google Play store by going to the app list and showing all apps. You can then open it and log in to your Google account. I already owned MX Player Pro, so it was a cinch to get it up and running and then I loaded a custom codec pack.- I attempted to run a game I own, by backing it up, copying it, and then side-loading it. Unfortunately, this game is not compatible with the system, so unfortunately, I could not say whether or not it would play full games (not mobile stuff). The game I was testing was Disgaea 1 Complete. Now I saw Disgaea 4, but I was not going to buy it just for these tests. If I purchase it in the future, I will amend this note.- I hadn’t tested Max (formally HBO Max) on this box until today, when I made this amendment to my review. It had no sound, was lagging, and I was frustratingly switching HDMI cables, disabling what I thought would fix it, looking up how to fix it and nothing worked. Then, I saw something that caught my eye. Go to settings which is a gear in the top-right bar. After that go to “Device Preferences” then go to “Decode and Bitstream”, then to “Audio Device”, and click on “Decode” instead of the default “HDMI Bitstream.” Now the audio in Max should work and make sure to wait before clicking anything because Max crashes if you don’t wait for it to load up.

Really Good Stream Box
This little stream box packs a lot into it. It plays like an android device. It’s got it’s own little App store with a huge lot of Apps to pick from. They have all the major stream services. It has various connections to it and uses Bluetooth so connecting to sound systems is pretty easy with all the options it comes with. It does have its own annoying quirks too unfortunately. Almost every time I turn this thing on I have to manually reconnect to everything that was previously connected to it. I only have to get into the Bluetooth options for the speakers to connect, and I have to switch the Wi-Fi option on every time I want to use it. It’s annoying. The saving grace, for me anyway, is that it comes with an Ethernet port on it so plugging it in is easier and much better of an option to use. Other than those things the box works pretty well. I like it a lot! Worth every dollar.

Generic android box
Connects easily to wifi. Cords it comes with could be longer. More expensive than a name brand. Uses a proprietary app store, is an andriod box it should use Google play. Rather than waste time trying to install it is rather just use chromecast.

Don’t throw away your Roku
I have a Roku, a Fire Stick, a WDTV, and the king of android boxes, an Nvidia Shield. And now I have this thing too. I took it out of the box and marveled at how small and light it is, just 4” X 4” and no more than a few ounces. That’s where the good part ended. A parsimonious 3 foot HDMI cable is supplied, but you’ll need your own batteries for the remote. The power cable is also 3 foot, which may require an extension cord to reach the floor where the power strip resides, as it did in my case. The upper right of the remote includes buttons to control a television, but I have no idea how they work or if they work. I could find no setting to control that aspect of the device. A quick start guide is included, but there was no actual manual, and I could find no Rupa website where a more illuminating manual might be found. The box booted up quickly, and running through the setup wizard was quick and painless. I successfully installed the apps for Youtube, Netflix, and Plex, the three services that I use the most. Youtube worked well in my limited testing, but that’s it. I couldn’t get the Netflix app past the startup screen. It just stayed there and wouldn’t allow me to navigate to a sign-in, or anything else for that matter. I tried the Netflix button on the remote and after a minute of spinning icons and a white screen, I was back to the Netflix startup screen where I was again invited to sign up or sign in, neither of which I could do. So I moved on to the Plex app, which didn’t fare much better. I attempted to sign in and a “layout support” overlay popped up to inquire whether I’d like to switch to TV layout. Why yes I would, I thought. I selected the switch to TV layout option and after a moment, it took me back to the sign-in page. I then repeated this same irritating process and was again returned to the sign-in screen. I suspect this might be what hell is like. I got clever and selected the “remind me later” option, at which point I was again returned to the sign-in screen with the layout support pop up. So I did that again too. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 30 or 40 times, shame on me.The remote also includes a media center button at the top center. I connected a hard drive with various media and naively gave it a go. Thumbnails appeared for some but not all videos, and those that did appear were very poorly rendered. To its credit, the media center played most .mp4 and .wmv videos, but the resolution was unimpressive and some videos stuttered. I tried some .mkv files and those actually looked great, but I couldn’t get audio on any of them. I tried every available audio setting (e.g. stereo, mono, etc) for a handful of .mkv files, but couldn’t get a peep out of anyone. Maybe it’s a codec issue, but I’ll investigate no further. The victory goes to the obstinate Rupa. I am beaten.

Works
This little box came with the necessary HDMI cable, albeit a short one. It has its own remote (batteries not included), as well. It’s easy enough to use, but slow. I have decent internet (no problems on my smart tv), and this took quite a while to set up and to download each app that I wanted. There is a search option in Apps so that you can search for the apps you’d like to download. Peacock is not an available app, I noticed. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and Pluto are. There are also tons of apps I’ve never heard of that I may explore more in the future to see what they offer.Overall, it does do what it needs to do, which is turn my dumb TV into a smart TV, running most of the streaming services I want… but for the price point that it’s currently at, and the lag (almost like it’s glitching), I can only give it 4 stars.

Works but Needs Updating
I got this as a way to have a streaming device that also had a browser with the idea of eliminating the need for my Mini PC. The streaming gods were not with me on this little box. A quick start guide is included, but there was no actual manual, and no Rupa website could be found. It actually worked as a browser quite well but what really falls short is the streaming portion which needs some serious updates to be anywhere useful. The only real browser (Google) downside, for me anyway, is that it would allow only the ones listed in the settings. I was looking to add my Monknow dashboard extension but it would not function. As for the streaming I spent a couple hours playing with it.The remote is quirky with duplicate icons (volume) with different functions and most if not all had no indication as to what their function was. Using it was hit and miss then try to get back to where you were if that move did not work. After downloading some of my streaming apps, Amazon Video, Netflix, Youtube and others then some trial and error it became quite easy. The difficult part was getting back to the other functions then back into the streaming channels. All did load reasonably fast but Youtube was the only one that gave a sharp image with Amazon and Netflix less that sharp along with all including YT having jerky motion. At this point I am reverting to my present setup Amazon, Roku, and my mini PC plugged into an HDMI port. I will be checking in on it to see if any progress is hopefully coming in the future as I think with Android 13 and the processor it has potential.

Great box overall
The best box I’ve had. Remote is really responsive, can mount the box behind the tv, the Android OS is fast, I can install many apps, iptv works great, so does emulation. I also really like the UI layout, easy to use.

Choose a different streaming box.
I thought I would try an Android box and see what I could do with it. The installation was okay but not the best. When you are picking your location it looks like you may be choosing different than what you had selected. For me I chose US English but when I used the down function on the remote it highlighted Russia, however when I next US English was selected.I cannot get the mute button to work but the volume buttons do work. The most frustrating thing was the need to move between the remote and the mouse functions to select what you wanted. For this alone I would never recommend this box. There is not a pause button on the remote. What you need to do is press the right arrow then the OK button. When you do this it does pause but moves you back to the previous screen instead of staying on the paused movie you are watching.I don’t recommend getting this box at all.

Frustrating and almost unusable with provided remote – User interface makes it difficult to use
I was anticipating good things because I had heard that Android TV devices were one of the best set top boxes. I have a couple Roku streaming boxes that work fine but this box is problematic. I’ll start with the fact that although the remote has a nice tactile feel, sometimes it doesn’t send the IR code, so I end up having to press multiple times to get a result, particularly with the up/down buttons. Second, it appears to get stuck in some menus without there being an apparent way to finish the selection or even get out of the menu. I did find that attaching a USB keyboard helped, but there were still some selections that seemed to not be able to finish. I eventually found that it required entering “Mouse Mode” to complete some of the actions, using the cursor keys to move a pointer around the screen. This was made more difficult because of the intermittent up and down buttons.I see now that some other producers of this type of device include an “Air Mouse” type of remote. I suspect that would be more functional than the buttons only remote. I did find that attaching a wireless mouse with dongle allowed much better experience. But I don’t see using a conventional mouse from my recliner.I have since programmed a learning/programmable remote to work with this device. Since my remote doesn’t have the poorly functioning buttons, it does work better. But I think some kind of mouse really works better.

Its alright
Let me start out by saying that this product is usable; however, it will not knock your socks off or anything. The unit is pretty lightweight and doesn’t feel all that high quality, but the purpose of a device is for its functionality. The UI seems old, and it’s not the snappiest, but in a pinch, it’ll get the job done. If you are only looking for a streaming device for your TV, then I would potentially keep searching, as this will leave you not angry but also not completely satisfied.
